We had the great opportunity to meet and be spoken to by the very talented celebrity photographer Greg Gorman a few weeks ago. His insight into the industry of editorial photography was enlightening and somewhat frustrating. It basically narrows down to the fact that too many people have a say in how the photographs will be taken.

While the industry dictates a lot about what it wants in a headshot I still try to get down to what the actor and myself can create as a two person team. I recently photographed an actor I've known for a long time. In my quest, roughly eight years ago, to figure out the headshot industry I asked an aspiring playwright/actor Brett Rickaby if I could do his headshots. We did two rolls of film that day. It "technically" wasn't my best work but Brett and I connected and we got what he wanted. In fact when he showed up last week he said he was still using a couple of the shots we took that day. He has since added to his repertoire of pictures (we're on our fourth photo shoot) but still sends out this eight year old shot. Since it worked so well we photographed an updated, color version of it.

Over the course of eight years Brett has written and starred in two of his own plays in which he had me shoot the press photos for. Brett has appeared in numerous commercial, T.V. and Film roles (including "24" and a scene opposite Sean Penn in "The Assassination of Richard Nixon"). Brett is currently working on a film adaptation of his first play and has some very talented name actors signed on to contribute. This will be his third film as writer/director. Brett is an extremely talented writer and actor. I hope to always be a part of his many projects.

Back from France

Things have been a bit hectic since I got back. What a great trip. I was gone for ten days. Five of which were spent in Paris taking in the city with my fiancé. If you're interested in that portion of the trip you can read about it here

JLG's booth was one of the best at the second largest show of its kind. If you've ever been to the Auto Shows here in the states, this makes them look like a school carnival. We went up nearly ten stories in a vertical lift for this shot. The other is the second story bar and restaurant for entertaining clients.

Since I've been back I've been shooting countless headshots, a fund raiser for Covenant House and a Wedding. It's great to see someone reach a new level in their career.

The best laid plans...

When a "soon to be" bride meets with me as a potential client I inevitably end up saying to them "it's not a matter of if something will go wrong but more of how many things will go wrong. This remark is always acknowledged by a knowing nervous smile and laugh. Well, this time around it was a matter of my meticulous planning that would be thwarted. I researched the area, saw the placement of the sun and decided on where each shot should take place. Homework done. Downtown L.A. and the trusty weather had a different plan for me. As I arrived at The Wells Fargo Building I noticed a large amount of film production trucks, trailers, cranes generators and lights. All of this was parked in the street that I had hoped to grab some great shots of the couple with the L.A. background. I did manage to incorporate it for "the story" part of the wedding. The other problem was that for the first time in three months thick black rain clouds hung above L.A. blocking any hope of my cool "ambient light" shots. All ideas had to be scrapped and I was on-stage without a script. We got some great shots and the couple was all for "shooting from the hip" literally.

Parking Downtown

I had a 12:00 appointment at an exclusive club in downtown L.A. today to view the premises for a wedding I'm shooting in mid October. I headed out early for fear of traffic but happily arrived a half hour early. Not wanting to park in the structure due to a huge parking fee I found a metered spot on the street andplungedd in a pocket full of change to buy me a whole half hour. Rather than be obnoxiously early I decided to scope out the area for possible wedding party setups. Mission accomplished. By now it was time to head for my appointment, unfortunately months worth of pocket change were used up on the meter. I quickly headed towards a deli and bought a bottle of Coke for $1.19. I handed the man a $20.00 bill and asked for a dollars worth of quarters with my change. It was then that his head shook violently and a strange sounding of multiple no's came from his mouth. I left quietly and proceeded to a McDonald's nearbye where I ordered a double cheeseburger off the Dollar Menu. $.092 was my change from the $1.08 total. I now had enough money for a half hour long appointment. I began making my way up to the 54th floor where I was greeted and introduced to the event coordinator. All went well. As I left the 54th floor I was asked if I needed validation for my parking.

Please allow me to introduce myself...

Here is my chance to keep you up to date with what’s happening with my career and occasionally my personal life (if I had one).

The Blog has become a new force in many industries and I embrace it fully.
